MMA and The UFC

MMA and the UFC are undeniably linked. However, they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference between the two and how they are related is the first step to enjoying a whole new sport.

MMA and Its Long History

MMA stands for mixed martial arts. This is a mix of boxing, wrestling, and a variety of martial arts forms. While it had an early reputation for being bloody and brutal, MMA has since morphed into one of the quickest growing sports in the world this century.

When you consider the roots of mixed martial arts had its beginning in ancient Greece, MMA is no new sport. Mixed martial arts was called pankration then, and was Greece’s combat sport in the ancient Olympic Games as far back as 648 BCE. Pankration blended elements of boxing, street brawling, and wrestling. There wasn’t much that was outlawed, except for eye-gouging and biting. The popular pankration events didn’t end until a fighter admitted defeat or was knocked out. Some matches even ended in the death of an opponent.

The UFC Brings MMA to the Nation

The UFC is an American mixed martial arts promotion corporation that began in November 1993. That first event occurred in Denver, CO, and served mainly to introduce a new kind of fighting to the nation. This mixed martial competition lacked weight divisions and allowed fighters of different disciplines, including kickboxing, Sambo, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, Karate, wrestling, and Judo, to compete with each other.

As the UFC events continued, the fighters developed a style that incorporated a mix of the different martial arts techniques into one form. This is what we think of as modern MMA fighting. More rules were added, making it less of a free-for-all brawl where groin punches and kicks, headbutting, and other crude moves were allowed. These changes happened slowly, with UFC 4 becoming the first bout that banned hair pulling.

By the late 1990s, laws were enacted in 36 states banning the kind of anything-goes fighting of the early decade. This caused the UFC to reconsider their rules. It got rid of some of the most offensive elements of MMA, including pulling hair, fish-hooking, head strikes, and strikes to the groin. It was at this point that the UFC started promoting itself as a sport instead of a fighting spectacle.

Now, the UFC is the biggest MMA promotion company in the world and showcases its fighters in events around the globe. It contains a dozen weight divisions, with four divisions just for women. It has become the most popular MMA brand, featuring bouts between the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world.

MMA Vs. Boxing: Which Is More Popular?

Before MMA was available to the masses, boxing was an extremely popular sporting event. It combined elements of grace and power into a combative dance that thrilled the wealthy and the poor alike. Major boxing events would showcase the current champions and hottest contenders in some of the biggest arenas on the planet. And the fans could not wait to get tickets to the next big event.

With the advent of MMA, many fans have chosen to follow the excitement of the blended fighting techniques instead of the strict rules of the boxing ring. Pay-per-view events allow you to enjoy the fight right from the comfort of your own home, so there’s no need for a trip to an arena. Since the MMA rules were added to make the fights more sporting, the UFC has gained in popularity steadily since the beginning of the 21st century.

Like any other sport, boxing will always have its devoted fans. And since mixed martial arts contains a foundation in boxing, many fans will enjoy both. But, for most fight fans, MMA offers more variety and bang for their sporting buck.

Sports and sports betting have evolved side by side. You can’t have one without the other, and with the spread of legalized gambling, sports betting is bigger than ever. Also, it is important to keep a tight control on the amount of money you bet on sporting events. Start by setting a reasonable budget for the day, week, month, or year. Then follow that budget to the letter. Otherwise, you could lose a lot more money than you can afford, leading to a host of personal and financial problems.

If you are having a hard time deciding which online betting site to join, you are not restricted to only one. You might try joining a few of them to get the kind of access you want. That way, you can check out the reward and bonus systems that different sites have to offer.
